Day 29 (September 18, 2006) - Idaho
<<^>>
Regrettably, we have to say good-bye to Montana - our next destination is Washington state, with a nightly stopover in the northern portion of Idaho.

We have chosen scenic Route 2 that through the Kootenai National Forest. I set off to drive while Petr takes a nap. After driving about one hour on it, I realize that it would be a perfect biking route, so I ask Petr to switch with me, give me some lead time and then follow me. I jump on my bike and off I go. It's rolling, not strenuous but with some pretty long climbing stretches, always counterbalanced by a nice descent. I pedal through dark patches of forest, open pastures with mountains to my left and right. I pass the carcass of a half-eaten deer, and I realize that we are still in bear country.... uhhhhh.... 30 miles later, Petr catches up with me and we continue pass Libby along the Kootenai river. We stop for a snack by a river gorge, just in time to follow some kayakers down to the whitewater and take pictures while they are having fun. Then we walk over a swinging bridge to take a few pictures and press on. We cross into Idaho when it's already past sunset.

Ponderay, ID looks like a good place to call it a day.
